Basic necessities. Common comforts. Things that most of us take for granted every day. Gratitude and respect for time served and sacrifices made for our freedom. That’s what Newby-ginnings strives to provide to our Veterans, our Active Servicemen and Women, and our Gold Star Families every day. With no hoops. No red tape. No appointments. No waiting months on end. And we do this with the support of our community. With nothing but donations and fundraisers. Because no money exchanges hands. There are no income eligibility guidelines and no proof of need required. Whatever they need, at no charge.
Every day we meet Veterans, Active Servicemen and Women, and Gold Star Families that are struggling financially; they are struggling with the VA system, health issues, PTSD, TBI, and relationship problems because of all of this.
We have found that Newby-ginnings is the place where they can come, not only for basic household necessities, but peer support, resources and referrals to other agencies.
We currently have a 6-member Board of Directors and a staff of about 120 regular and amazing volunteers. Their unselfish effort, caring and compassion for others is the life blood of our organization. They are a constant source of inspiration for not only me but for the clients we work with every day.
So far in 10 years, we have enrolled over 7400 Active Servicemen and Women and Gold Star Families in our area. From Montana, Cheney, Deer Park and everywhere in between. We average about 150 visitors to our shop every day that we are open, and we enroll at least 10 new Veterans a week. Simply stated, with the support of our community, we have impacted the lives of thousands of people to an extent that we will never truly understand.

Theresa Hart is the Founder and Director of Newby-ginnings of North Idaho. She graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In 1996, Theresa, her then-husband Wayne, and their two sons, Nick and Nathan, moved to Coeur d’Alene, where she began her nursing career as the Health Coordinator with Early Head Start. She later spent ten years with Panhandle Health District before joining the Idaho Infant Toddler Program as a Developmental Therapist.
In 2009, Theresa married James, and in 2011 the family settled in Hayden. It was during this time that Theresa, her family, friends, and the entire community experienced an unimaginable loss. After a brief attempt to return to her work with the State of Idaho, Theresa and James made the difficult decision to become a single-income household while Theresa searched for purpose and direction in the wake of their loss.
Nick’s friends and battle buddies were also struggling, and Theresa recognized the deep need for support among, not only these young men and women, but all Veterans, Active-Duty Service Members and Gold Star Families. Together with James, their family, and close friends, she founded Newby-ginnings in October 2013.
Under Theresa’s leadership, Newby-ginnings provides essential resources, a welcoming community, and a place of belonging for those who have sacrificed for our country. Her mission remains rooted in honoring her son’s legacy by ensuring that every individual who walks through the doors of Newby-ginnings is met with dignity, compassion, and unwavering support.

I am a North Idaho native and retired after 20 years of service with the U.S. Navy, Idaho National Guard, and Washington Air National Guard. I have been involved with Newby-ginnings since 2014 as a volunteer and have served as Vice President and now President of the Board of Directors. I am a life member of the VFW and the Seabee Veterans of America.

As the Treasurer of Newby-ginnings of North Idaho, I have the opportunity to be a part in fulfilling the mission for our military and their families. I am a wife to a veteran Navy Corpsman, mom to a son in the Navy and daughter to a father who was Army.

I began my volunteer service with Newby‑ginnings nearly six years ago, with the goal of helping Veterans in any way I could. My motivation was deeply personal, as my husband is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War.
Along the way, I found my happy place, and about three years ago I was honored to be invited to join the Board of Directors as Secretary.

Having grown up in a military family and after serving over 30 years in the military, I guess I feel more comfortable around military people. After retiring, I joined the Patriot Guard to honor those who gave all. It wasn't long after having stood the flag line for Nick that I heard about what Theresa was doing with Newby-ginnings and felt that with my free time I should go volunteer. It amazes me to see how far we've come in 12 years and how far Newby-ginnings might go. But one thing is for sure, I'll always have Theresa's back.

I serve as a Board Member and Volunteer at Newby-ginnings in Post Falls, where I have the honor of supporting Veterans in various capacities through this incredible program. With nearly ten years of involvement, I feel genuinely privileged to be a part of this initiative.

As a family, we moved to Coeur d'Alene in 2007. In 2009, my late husband joined the Army National Guard and deployed with Nick Newby and Nathan Beyers. We love this community and have served in many ways, including Newby-ginnings. Watching Newbyginnings grow and thrive has been an inspiration to me. And helping a bit along the way has been a joy. I am happy and grateful to assist this organization and its support of veterans.

Drew is the Program Manager for Newby-ginnings. He started as a volunteer and then sat on the board of directors for our organization. Immediately after getting out of the Marine Corps he took the position of Program Manager. This was his dream job, and it was fitting that he was Newby-versed into the position. Drew is a family man, married to his wife Tina and has 4 short people. Outside of helping veterans like himself his hobbies are spending time with the family and playing with the kids.

I was born and raised in Virginia and proudly served 20 years in the United States military. After retiring from military service, I continued my career at the Coeur d’Alene Casino, where I worked for 22 years before retiring.
Service has always been an important part of my life. While working at the Casino, I volunteered with the nonprofit organization We’ve Got Stuff, serving as their driver and helping deliver essential items to those in need. Through that role, I learned about a new nonprofit called Newby-ginnings, founded by a Gold Star Mother who was providing personal and household essentials to Veterans at no charge.
When We’ve Got Stuff dissolved, the organization donated surplus products—and their truck—to Newby-ginnings. I was in the truck the day it was donated and have been the Newby-ginnings driver ever since. I am proud to say I have served in that role for the past 11 years.
One of the best things in my life is coming to and serving with Newby-ginnings. Helping other Veterans is incredibly rewarding, and I am honored to continue supporting those who have served our country.
